Broadway Bound Kids is proud to be partnering with the following organizations to bring the Broadway Jr. program to local middle schools that are underserved in the arts.
This year BBK is delighted to be at three first-year schools, Angelo Patri in the Bronx, Hunter's Point Community School in Long Island City, and Glendale Intermediate School in Queens. Our teaching artists work with each of these schools at least once a week, for a total of 100 hours over the course of the program. They support the team of in-school teachers in all aspects of creating the production, as some of the in-school teachers don't have any experience putting on a show. At the end of the semester each school puts on a full Broadway Jr. production, and students also get to celebrate their success by sharing a number from their show on a Broadway Stage in a city-wide festival hosted by a celebrity.
More information from NYC DOE: The Broadway Jr. Program is a partnership between Music Theatre International (MTI) and the NYC Department of Education with support from the Shubert Foundation. The program brings musical theater into NYC public middle schools that are currently underserved in the arts and provides the training and materials necessary to create and present a Broadway Junior production in their schools.
The goals of the Broadway Jr. Program are to:
Support middle schools to develop sustainable, quality arts education programs
Engage students in the joyful process of creating musical theater (rehearsal, design, and performance)
Foster a strong educational community as students, staff, and families all “play a role”
Encourage the connection of arts programming to curriculum study in all content areas.
